El Hierro, like the rest of the Canary Islands, is extremely mountainous. The highest point is right in the centre of the island; Malpaso, which reaches up to 1501 meters. It’s total size is just 278 square metres.
It’s the youngest of the islands. At just three million years of age, El Hierro has undergone less erosion than the other islands resulting in a spectacular set of ravines, cliffs, escarpments and volcanic domes.
El Hierro is well-known for its awesome cliffs (up to 1,200 metres) and breath-taking views. You’ll see fantastic lava formations that contrast starkly with gentle rolling hills at the centre of the island. It’s also well known for its colourful and lush vegetation that can be seen on most parts.
El Hierro has a large population of Canary Island Pines, Tree Heath and Wax Myrtles. This also home to the Canary Junipers. Some these trees are up to one thousand years old! and have been shaped into the most extraordinary shapes by the wind.
