Along with Lanzarote, El Hierro has become a member of UNESCO’s world network of Biosphere Reserves, due to its exceptional ecosystem and stunning natural scenery.
The people of El Hierro have always made a firm commitment to keeping their island as natural and unspoilt as possible.
Just recently, they have installed new solar-powered streetlights in the town of Frontera. This initiative should encourage other alternative energy schemes that will help to maintain the balance of El Hierro’s ecosystem.
UNESCO’s World Network of Biospheres now has 341 reserves in 94 countries. El Hierro has been the awarded the prestigious Asturias Prize for Concorde, in recognition of its efforts to preserve the island’s unique natural sites and communities.
