El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands and is located in the extreme southwest of the group - the 'edge of the ancient world'. It’s only 287 hectares in total and has an altitude of 1,501 metres.
It truly is a natural paradise. El Hierro has spectacular cliffs (up to 1,200 metres), lush green vegetation, large forests, protected species, gentle rolling hills, stunning lava formations and coves with natural pools for swimming. More than half of its beautiful landscape is protected by the Natural Spaces Act.
The locals or "Herreños", as they are called, are incredibly friendly. Their hospitality is legendary.
The weather here is basically the same as on the other islands; warm all year round. You can visit the island at any time of the year and more or less be guaranteed sunshine.
Hiring a car is an absolute must. You’ll need two or three days to get a good feel for the island. If you don’t drive you can always take a taxi. Most villages on the island have their own taxi driver who will gladly be your tour guide for the day and normally at a very reasonable price.
El Hierro is very popular with adventure and water sports fans. Scuba diving or snorkelling in the waters surrounding the island is an amazing experience; you’ll see some spectacular colours, marine life and underwater landscapes.
You can also go surfing, windsurfing, paragliding, walking caving, rock climbing and mountain biking…
All the nightlife is to be found in the island's picturesque capital, Valverde. It’s not exactly Ibiza but it does have lots of traditional bars, restaurants and even a couple of discos!
El Hierro is spectacular; parts of it are breathtaking! It’s the least known of the Canary Islands. If you are looking for somewhere truly different then you’ve come to the right place.
Welcome to El Hierro!
