El Hierro is tiny. Apparently, 50,000 years ago 300 cubic kilometres of the island just fell off into the sea, making it the world’s largest ever landslip location. This is why it’s now so small. El Hierro was once declared to be the “edge of the ancient world” as it was located exactly on the zero meridian. Up until 1833 every traveller knew exactly where the island was.
It held this title for two thousand years, and then the zero meridian was moved to Greenwich. After this, El Hierro slipped into obscurity. |
