El Hierro’s spectacular sea beds make it a paradise for diving and snorkelling. The waters surrounding the island can be very deep. At some points, the coastal shelf drops off dramatically to nearly 100 metres! With good visibility, you can even get vertigo! The Marine Reserve also has a large variety of caves, arches and volcanic tunnels.
There are some beautiful tropical fish to be seen here. You’ll see trumpet fish, spiny globefish, black coral, and large shoals of black sea bream as well as many others…
You can even see sharks here in summer! Hammerheads are quite common along with groups of big rays, tuna and grey triggerfish.
One of the best places to go diving on the island is in Mar Las Calmas. The waters here are incredibly calm with great visibility. El Hierro now has over 25 recognised dive sites and several clubs and schools set up on the island. |
